My
practice to date is as an artist and photographer working largely
within the subject area of the
landscape.
I have used photography to interrogate the constructuction and conception
of the
landscape
as a palimpsest on which to build ideas around society, politics,
economics and culture
as
well as offering commentary on our relationships with our environment
and surroundings. I am
also
interested in history and the representational relationships of photography,
memory and
experience.
Many of my images incorporate texts within the actual image and on
occasion other
elements
such as sculpture or sound environments.
Much of my work has involved a dialogue between image and text and
I am interested in the ways
that
meanings and interpretations can be questioned and developed through
the association of
the various elements and layers of the work. I am also interested
in working with narrative, sequential
andother
display and distribution contexts apart from exhibition such as publication.
I am particularly
interested
in photography within the context of public art and have worked on
a number of public art
projects
and commissions.
Audiences and their engagement are a central concern for me and the
need for my work to connect
with
an audience has been critical in informing the aesthetic strategies
that I have followed from my
early
billboard projects in the late 80’s through to more recent publishing
and exhibition projects.
My work has been published and exhibited widely in the U.K. and overseas,
and is represented in
numerous
public and private collections. I am interested both in producing
work for the gallery and in
working within the broader public domain. I am interested in developing
new aesthetic strategies within
which to engage different audiences. I see my practice as being contained
within a critical framework
and
supported through discourse.
I have presented papers and made presentations to numerous conferences
and have produced works
for
a broad variety of public art projects.
